What a Week It's Been

Thank you to everyone that has been sending thoughts, arguments and questions on the topical issue of same-sex marriage. I have been going over submissions as well as working on my own, unfortuantely with the devesating Earthquake in Hiati, much of my attention (and my friends') has been focused elsewhere. Don't fret, my patient followers. I will post my findings soon. I think this same-sex marriage debate is the equal rights issue of our day. And again, I thank you for all your passionate depositions of your 2 cents.

On a side note, if by chance, you are looking to donate to the Haitian relief funds, please be careful. There are a host of scams and degenerate swindlers lurking among the shadows of the web. Stay with bigger and well-established companies like the http://www.redcross.org/ (or if you know of any reputable ones, please post) even if you've been blessed with an "official" letter from a disenfranchised Haitian relative of a Ugandan prince trying to regain access to his $50 Million trust fund that only your $2K can secure...he'll never get me again....kidding  :p

You can also give to UNICEF at www.unicefusa.org/haitiquake. UNICEF is taking the lead among aid groups on the ground for some major areas, including water, which is one of the most immediate needs. Due to the scope of this emergency, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF has agreed to waive all retention for administrative costs, meaning that 100% of every donation goes directly to Haiti.

Thanks Jessica. I think that unicef is one of the only 100% donating entities that I've seen so far; most hover around 93-97%. Thanks for the info.

The best place to donate is www.standwithhaiti.org/haiti this organization has been in Haiti for over 20 years and they have been treating people since day one; they need surgical teams and supplies. Dr. Paul Farmer is an amazing person who runs clinics all over Haiti and Africa.

I was trying to figure out what charity to focus on for Haiti and beyond. I heard about this "review" site from my trusty National Public Radio called Charity Navigator. It was very helpful to me. No offense to the Red Cross, they are great, but there are a lot charities out there to consider/support.
Anyway, save/review this link to see exactly where your donations go:
www.charitynavigator.org/

I personally chose: Water Missions in Haiti: www.watermissions.org

UNICEF is actually among only 5% of charities that have received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for 5 years in a row, and they have been working in Haiti since 1949. About 80% of their staff on the ground are actually Haitian. With that said, there are a bunch of great organizations on the ground!
